A love letter to Dallas comedy
In Joke’s on You, Dallas-Ft. Worth isn’t just a city. It’s not just a location. It’s a character in its own right. The film is a love letter to the city of Dallas and its comedy scene – the venues, comics and audiences that make DFW the thriving center for arts and entertainment that it is today.
Combined, the creative team behind Joke’s on You have decades of comedy experience in the DFW metroplex and know what makes it different from other cities in Texas and the US. We are excited to highlight the real-life venues and personalities that have helped to launch many nationally known comedy careers.

characters 1

maya – The rising star
“I’m Blunder Woman!”
A quirky accountant with a propensity towards nervous babble, Maya is used to blending into the background. That is, until she gives stand-up comedy a try. To her surprise, she discovers that she’s better suited to a life of telling jokes than crunching numbers.
With the support of friends old and new, Maya begins a journey that she hopes will lead her to Dallas’ elite competition, The Biggest D Comedy Showdown, and beyond. She may blunder along the way, but what doesn’t kill her makes her kick some serious ass.

Sam – the love interest
“I lived in New York.”
After a soul-crushing career set-back, Samir relocates from the Big Apple to the Big D to live with his Aunt Sooze and cousin, Gerry.
Misfortune turns to fate when he falls in love with his beautiful new coworker, Maya. He uses his family’s comedy connections and his New York savvy to help her navigate the strange new world of comedy.
And did he mention he used to live in New York?

Gerry – the Rival comic
“The G is for Greatness.”
Gerry has a smooth voice and smoother pick-up lines. With Sooze, an old-school comedienne, as his mother, he literally grew up in the spotlight. And it shows.
As his career begins to plateau, he blames the up-and-comers. At the top of his hit list is his cousin’s new girlfriend, Maya, who’s attracting attention around town and giving him a run for his money. There can only be one “Biggest D” — is Dallas big enough for both Maya and Gerry?

sooze – the mentor
“Sooze. Rhymes with Booze.”
The matriarch of Dallas’ comedy scene, Sooze was selling out venues from Chicago to Dallas long before the Ewings arrived at Southfork Ranch.
Sooze handed the mic over to her son, Gerry, and focuses now on teaching Maya and other comics how to craft the perfect “tight ten.” As Dallas’ most sought after stand-up coach, you never know if you’ll get tough love or applause from Sooze, but you’ll always get what you need.

George – the boss
“It’s not pee!”
Maya’s boss, George, encourages her to stretch herself. He’s part boss, part mentor, and part friend — a complicated role that frequently puts him on the receiving end of Maya’s messier mistakes. (That dark stain on his pants is Maya’s coffee — definitely not pee…)
Although his best friend is Maya’s rival, Gerry, George has made it clear that he will always have her back. After all, he has a Black Belt and he’s not afraid to use it! (Ok, so it’s a Six Sigma process improvement certification.)

Shay – the Best Friend
“It’s the new you.”
Maya’s best friend since college, Shay knows when Maya needs to be pushed outside her comfort zone or comforted after being pushed too far. She is Maya’s biggest cheerleader (literally, at times) and will fiercely defend Maya to anyone who dares to belittle her.
When she’s not planning her wedding to Kelly or attending all of Maya’s stand-up sets (no matter how late on a work night!), Shay runs her own therapy practice. After all, God wouldn’t have blessed us with caffeine if he didn’t expect us to need it…

Kelly – the coworker
“Mimosa down. Repeat. Mimosa down.”
Maya’s marketing colleague, Kelly is a free-spirit who is as comfortable discussing ad buys as she is your horoscope. When Maya brought her college roommate, Shay, to the office happy hour, the rest was history. Now Kelly and Shay are engaged and the three are an inseparable trio.
As Maya helps them prepare for their wedding, Kelly helps Maya navigate her new relationship and comedy career. Kelly is always there to lighten the mood with a smile, a hug, or a Jell-O shot.
